Blood Transfusions and Alternative Medicines

Updated: May 29, 2021

Everyone wants good quality, effective medical care. True fact! If it is cheaply available, Eureka! Well that’s a dream waiting to happen. Medicines are not cheap. Even if you go to buy an over the counter (OTC) cough syrup, or headache medicine you know how expensive it is; but what do you do, what you must have, you must buy. Well then when you are buying something then why not go all the way. Spend good money on your health; don’t settle for the cheap stuff. Today I want to speak about bloodless medicines. Certain religious groups believe in bloodless medicines. Religion is something I don’t like to discuss in my blogs. But I like to share the finer points of certain religious beliefs. Certain religious sects don’t believe in blood transfusion, organ donation, medicine or medical treatment. Before jumping into conclusion or ridiculing them stop and think of their point of view. They have the right to have their opinion, but you cannot condemn them. Why would you scorn someone whose way f life is different from you? Let them be! You don’t want to follow it, then that is fine, they are not asking you too. But just take a closer look and see how much sense this whole thing makes and perhaps your way of thinking will change.

When we fall sick we try to seek out the best possible medical care for ourselves and our families. When we have problems with our health, we don’t do home remedies, we seek the help of medical professionals, with the necessary skills in providing medical and surgical care. During this process it is also possible that we might need without blood, without which a patient might not survive. So here the scenario is that there is a there is very ill patient who is in need of serious medical attention and care, and also needs a lot of medicines and blood transfusions.

Now what about people who don’t believe in blood transfusions? Do we just set aside their beliefs or respect their beliefs? Sometimes god forbid, in life and death situations certain quick decisions have to be taken. But let’s say you have time to make a decision. You have the choice; then what would you do? Let’s talk about it.

During surgery a person loses a lot of blood. What can be done to replace the blood. If the person’s belief does not support blood transfusion it does not mean that no action should be taken; on the contrary alternative medicine should be provided to the patient. When a person loses a lot of blood in an accident or during surgery his/her blood pressure drops rapidly and he/she may go into shock and might even get a seizure. Immediate action needs to be taken. What at that time you are faced with a patient who does not believe in blood transfusion? What is the best course of action to take? You need to first stop the bleeding. The blood loss in the body needs to be replaced; meaning the lost volume of blood in the body needs to be restored. That will prevent the body from going into further shock or weakness or coma etc. Keep the remaining red blood cells and other components in circulation, by taking necessary action; you don’t necessarily need to use blood for this purpose, if the person has certain belief’s then respect the person’s belief’s and choose the alternative and use volume replacement medicines. Various volume expanders are available. The simplest is saline (salt) solution, which is both inexpensive and compatible with our blood. If this is your choice, then speak to your doctor about it and see the various options you have available. Why wait for the last minute? It’s better to be always prepared.

Modern medicines have advanced so much that we can get all the help we need. Bloodless treatments have been developed to help patients. Unbelievable, unheard off? But fact! Bloodless treatment will benefit us in the long term. Blood transfusions sometimes might have a significant risk of detrimental and adverse impact on a patient’s health. No physician would knowingly endanger their patient’s life, but blood transfusion might exactly do that. There is a fifty percent chance that there could be a bacterial infection transmitted by blood transfusion. Bloodless treatments reduce the risk of patient’s risk of exposure to pathogens. What are pathogens? Pathogens are a type of bacteria or microorganism that can cause a disease.

Bloodless medicines are now being used to widely. It is not that people are not aware of bloodless medicines. It is hugely beneficial, though the treatment might be expensive and not available in all hospitals. The more people become aware of bloodless medicines and opt for this option In many countries, the cheaper and more widespread this treatment will become. Any patient can select this kind of treatment, not just people from a religion. This type of treatment is done to circumvent blood-transfusion risks or any blood-borne diseases or to avoid weakening your immune system reactions.

Patients, including children who go for alternative medical treatments and, who do not receive blood transfusions don’t experience any problems.

My viewpoint on blood transfusion is basically based on the fact that it can lead to spread of bacterial infection. If there is an option I would really prefer not to be given blood transfusion and opt for bloodless medicines. It is a matter of opinion, I believe in being an organ donor, even a live organ donor if the need arises, many people would be shocked at the very thought of such a consideration; but again it’s like I mentioned it’s a matter of personal opinion. Nowadays with the advent of modern medicines and bloodless medicines complex surgeries can be effectively accomplished without blood transfusions.

Medical community is now agreeing with the strategies for avoiding transfusions. In 2004, an article published in a medical a journal indicated that some of the methods developed for use in patients will become standard practice in the coming.” Another editorial, in 2010, in the journal “Heart, Lung and Circulation” stated that bloodless surgery should not be limited to patients of a particular sect but should be made available to all patients.”

Many hospitals, world-wide, use bloodless medicine techniques to perform complex surgical procedures.
